EXTRACTION, curated by Pierre Bélanger (OPSYS), opened in the Canadian Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, running from May 27 to November 27, 2016. The commissioner was the Art Gallery of Alberta (Catherine Crowston). RVTR's team was Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov and Colin Ripley, with research assistants Jen Ng, Andrew Wald, Dan Tish and Ya Suo.
The project, an installation, film and book, examines Canada's resource extraction. It was selected through a national competition by a Canada Council for the Arts peer committee, announced in December 2015.
EXTRACTION later received the 2017 AZ Award for Social Good and a 2017 CSLA National Award of Excellence.
